
Queen Latifah was born Dana Elaine Owens on March 18th, 1970 in Newark, New Jersey. Latifah was the second child born to Lance and Rita Owens. She is most famous for her social activism, acting skills and her ability to rhyme. A Muslim cousin gave Latifah the name "delicate sensitive" when she was eight years old. Latifah sang in the choir of the Shiloh Baptist church located in Bloomfield, New Jersey. Her first public performance singing "Home" as one of the two Dorothys in a stage production of The Wizard of Oz. Her mother was a key influencer for her involvement; she was constantly in touch with the school and with the music. She invited Mark James, a local disc jockey, also known as D.J. Mark the 45 King, to appear at a dance school.
